F/A-18E Super Hornet ‘VFA-27 Royal Maces CAG 2015’
Item no: 02178 Price: £29.99
Hasegawa has re-packaged its outstanding 1/72 F/A-18E Super Hornet with another set of striking decals in Carrier Air Group (CAG) commander format.
Parts are unchanged from previous offerings, which means one gets 13 styrene runners (including two clear) of various sizes, all containing crisply moulded styrene components. Surface detail is rendered as fine engraved panel lines, and the type’s saw tooth-edged undercarriage doors and vents are reproduced accurately. Options are limited to open/closed canopy and raised/lowered landing gear, so anyone hoping for a folded-wing configuration will need to rely on aftermarket sources. However, this is a great kit, and apart from the need for careful alignment on the wings, should assemble quite easily. Note that several panel lines will need to be either filled or scribed…these are detailed in Stage 2 of the instructions.
Unlike most other Hasegawa offerings, a small number of underwing stores are supplied, namely three fuel tanks, two AIM-120 AMRAAM, two AIM-9X Sidewinders and an AN/ASQ-228 ATFLIR targeting pod; anything else will need to be acquired from the spares box, Hasegawa’s own weapon sets or other aftermarket products.
In a change to previous Super Hornet boxings, there isn’t an option for painting the livery and applying just stencilling and artwork; everything is supplied in decal form. Two liveries are supplied, both featuring VFA-27’s striking black/yellow regalia:
