Spitfire Mk.XVI Dual Combo

Scale: 1/72

Having released a splendid 1/72 Spitfire Mk.IX, it was thought to be inevitable Eduard would follow it with a Mk.XVI (as with its 1/48 Spitfires), but curiously, currently it’s only available as either overtrees (just the styrene runners) or this limited-edition product. However, it’s a great value package, with two kits (one each of the standard and bubbletop-style fuselages), canopy and wheel masks and two photo-etched metal frets. Note that both airframes feature early style wings, which lack the ‘teardrop’ bulged section over the wheel wells seen on later machines. The 12 styrene runners (six for each model) are exceptional in terms of detail and mould quality, with the highlight being the delicate surface engraving, which extends to the multitudes of miniscule rivet marks on the wings and fuselage. As always with its Limited Editions, Eduard really spoils the modeller, and there are eight schemes, depicting airframes assigned to Belgian, British, Canadian, New Zealand and Polish squadrons, all in standard World War Two RAF markings:
TB100/GE-D, 349 Squadron, Wunstorf, Germany, summer 1945
TD341/2I-V, 443 Squadron (RCAF), Uetersen, Germany, August 1945
TB675/OU-V, 485 Squadron (RNZAF), Fassberg, Germany, summer 1945
SL721/JM-R, Metropolitan Communications Squadron, 1948
TD240/WX-V, 302 (Polish) Squadron, Varrelsbuch, Germany, summer 1945
RR227/9N-R, 127 Squadron RAF, Grimbergen, Belgium, November 1944
TB634/AU-S, 421 Squadron (RCAF), Petit Brogel, Belgium, March 1945
TB752/KH-Z, 403 Squadron (RCAF), Petit Brogel, Belgium, April 1945
