Representing one of the more complicated Eggplane offerings, Hasegawa’s P-38 is one of the older kits in the range, but is still a delight to build. This latest version features markings for ‘Putt Putt Maru’, an aircraft from the 470th Fighter Group, based in Dobodura, New Guinea, flown by noted ace (and group commander) Colonel Charles ‘Mac’ MacDonald. As with all Eggplanes, the main fuselage is scaled to that of an average egg, with the wings and control surfaces sized accordingly. Flash was present on several parts in AMW’s sample, but this is unsurprising given the age of the kit. Detail is minimal, but the P-38’s characteristic battery of nose guns is included, and there are even two underwing drop tanks to adorn the finished model. The decal sheet is excellent, with most of the markings being quick and easy to apply, although the large bat-shaped item for the nose will require patience to add, due to the highly curved nature of this area.
