P-3C Orion JMSDF Fleet Air Wing 1
Item no: 02158 Price: £69.99
It might be hard to believe, but Hasegawa’s P-3C Orion is fast approaching its 40th anniversary, and has been released in at least 18 different iterations (not counting re-boxings by other manufacturers).
That said, it’s the only kit of the type in 1/72, and despite the obvious shortfalls of raised panel lines and minimal interior detail (just the cockpit is addressed), it builds into an impressive model. All the styrene parts are unchanged from later boxings (reflecting the P3C Update III configuration), and perhaps unsurprisingly, there is more flash than one would expect in a Hasegawa offering. The decal sheet is the undisputed highlight, featuring full stencil data (although large areas of carrier film on the wing walkways may cause issues) sharp colour delineation, good opacity (preventing bleed-through from underlying tones) and perfect register…most notably on the tail artwork. Two schemes are supplied, both for white/Light Gull Gray airframes assigned to the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force’s Fleet Air Wing 1:
5033/33, VP-7, Kanoya Air Base
5083/83, VP-1, Kanoya Air Base
