Kawanishi N1K1 Kyofu Early/Late Version Combo
Item no: 02065 Price: £34.99
Hasegawa’s ‘combo’ sets are a great idea, providing two kits in a single package for (usually) less than the price of the separate items.
Its N1K1 Kyofu (Allied nickname ‘Alf’) dual offering isn’t quite as generous as other releases, as there are sufficient parts for just one early and one late airframe (rather than providing for two of one version if desired). However, this is a product of Hasegawa’s 1990s refresh of its classic Japanese fighters, so one receives a pleasing cockpit interior, detailed radial engine and engraved panel lines. The major differences between the early and late sub-types were the nacelle, propeller hub and canopy, and these changes are captured accurately. Unlike earlier floatplane kits/combos, Hasegawa has thoughtfully provided a weight for the main float section, to prevent the model from tail-sitting when positioned on the separate ground handling dolly. Four schemes are supplied, three for an early airframe and one for a late ‘Alf’:
N1K1 early type, 102 or 103, Otsu Naval Flying Group, 1944
N1K1 early type, 137, Sasebo Naval Flying Group, 1944
N1K1 late type, 132, Sasebo Naval Flying Group, 1944
