Advertised as a general purpose adhesive, LazerBond combines a liquid glue with a UV light ‘accelerator’ that cures the bond in seconds. Designed to repair practically any material, it has a plethora of uses in modelling, from joining dissimilar materials to filling sink marks and creating navigation lights on aircraft. As seen in the accompanying photographs, it is quick and easy to use, without the risk of sticking one’s fingers together inherent with Superglue. A word of caution though, it should be used in a well-ventilated room. Also, though it’s tempting to work close-up, particularly with small parts, it’s advisable to work at a slight distance, as the vapours given off during curing are rather strong, and it might be beneficial to wear a filter mask.

For this review, it was decided to fill a small scratch and a large sink mark, before attempting to make a navigation light (as this product dries clear); all of these on a scrap 1/72 Lightning wing. The glue is similar in viscosity to medium thickness Superglue, so it won’t overspill that easily, but it’s worth applying two or more thin layers rather than a single thick one. Once applied, the UV light is used for literally three to five seconds, after which the cement has hardened sufficiently to sand and/or cut. The same principles were followed with the navigation light, and from cutting a gap in the leading edge to a quick polish of the completed fixture took less than five minutes.

Although hard to see here, the glue has filled the sink mark and after five seconds with the UV light, it was hard enough to sand.

As the cured adhesive was harder than the surrounding plastic, care will be needed when sanding it smooth.

Less than three minutes after applying the first glue, the scratch is filled and sanded.

The navigation light was approached in the same manner as the other ‘tests’ and this was the result after five minutes, with the hardened adhesive sanded and polished slightly to highlight its clear finish.
